September Meeting

Phil Smith

Notes of meeting 14th September 2017

This month there were 17 members present.

Club Chairman Rob Dean

Rob gave a brief presentation of activities undertaken at Axminster and the wood store; he then covered the xmas market activity in Pembroke Castle for which we almost withdrew due to lack of organization support.

Offers of support were received from Chris Forth, John Blake, Maurice Fellows, and John Roberts so we have opportunity to proceed, but now need to urgently confirm attendance to man stall.

Rob is of the opinion that there is a lack of support which appears to be to be the norm within the club, and our performance at the xmas market will determine future events within the club.

This month we had 2 demonstrations, the first John Blake produced a Christmas tree using a bowl gouge and skew chisel

John then produced another Christmas favourite, a spinning top using small off cuts of wood that would normally be discarded into the scrap bin.

The second demonstration by John Charnock showed the basics for a bell from which a hand bell or “hanging bell” can be developed.

This Month’s Competition

The open section winner was Jerome Kelleher with an arrangement of assembled rings made from a recovered 19th century teak plinth.

The novice section was won by Rob Dean with a bowl including a copper ring insert.

Next Month’s Competition

Following this month’s demonstration the competition will be a xmas decoration.

Next Month’s Meeting

The demonstration will be Pen Making.

We are a group of people of varying competences sharing a common interest in woodturning of all sorts.

Our aims as set out in our constitution are:-

1. To foster friendship amongst woodturners in the area.

2. To impart knowledge and expand the craft of woodturning.

Meeting of the club will be held on Second And Fourth Thursday of the month @7.30 pm, at the Pembroke 21c Foundry House(Foundry House, Orange Way, Pembroke, SA71 4DR).
